<p>SAN FRANCISCO — Google announced a new generation of Chrome OS–based laptops at the company’s I/O developer conference.</p>
<p>The new device will be called the Chromebook, and its interface will be based entirely on Google’s Chrome browser. In other words, everything you do with a Chromebook will be on and through the web.<br />
<span id="more-8288"></span><br />
Google has formed partnerships with two manufacturers to build the hardware, Acer and Samsung. Each of the companies will produce one Chrome netbook.</p>
<p>Acer’s model will run on Intel’s dual-core Atom processor, with an 11.6-inch HD display. Google claims a 6-hour battery life, with instant-on capability. It weighs just under 3 pounds, and will come in Wi-Fi or 3G models, starting at $350.</p>
<p>Samsung’s model is similar, though a bit bigger. Its larger 12.1-inch display puts Samsung’s Chromebook at 3¼ pounds, so it’s also somewhat heavier. But the makers promise better battery life, at 8.5 hours. It will run on the same Intel Atom dual-core processor, and have the same USB and SD card slots that the Acer model will have. Samsung’s model will start at $430 for Wi-Fi, and $500 for a 3G version.</p>
<p>Google’s initial foray into this market launched last year with the CR-48 web-only laptop. Google said the pilot program had over 1 million participants. Initial feedback was generally positive, except for scathing reviews of the CR-48’s trackpad.</p>
<p>Google vice president of Chrome Sundar Pichai assured the developer audience that the new Chromebooks will come with “fully reworked trackpads.”</p>
<p>And in a hacker-friendly nod to its developers, Pichai said Chromebooks will come with “full jailbreaking mode built in, so you can play around with the kernel all you want.”</p>
<p>The Chromebook will be available to the public through Amazon.com and BestBuy.com beginning June 15 for U.S. customers. It will also be available in a small number of other countries: Britain, France, Spain, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.</p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-8290" href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/2011/05/16/google-to-offer-chrome-laptop-for-students-at-20month/samsung-series5-angle-640x449/"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8290" title="samsung-series5-angle-640x449" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/samsung-series5-angle-640x449-300x210.png" alt="" width="300" height="210" /></a></p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-8291" href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/2011/05/16/google-to-offer-chrome-laptop-for-students-at-20month/acer-zgb-leftangle-640x393/"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8291" title="acer-zgb-leftangle-640x393" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/acer-zgb-leftangle-640x393-300x184.png" alt="" width="300" height="184" /></a></p>
<p>The devices are made by both Samsung and Acer, and will likely be available in June.Prices are expected to be well under $500.</p>
<p>The manufacturers and timeline are within what Google said at the press conference last December announcing the Chrome laptop.</p>
<p>I used Google’s beta device, the CR-48, extensively. It was a good machine, with the greatest woes around hardware issues like battery and Wifi connectivity. Presumably professional manufacturers have addressed some of that.</p>

<li>MacBook &#8211; 10 hour battery life</li>
</ul>
<p><a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/macbook.png"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4365" title="macbook" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/macbook-300x108.png" alt="" width="300" height="108" /></a></p>
<p>Apple has, at last, updated its MacBook Pro Line with new CPUs and graphics. The 15-inch can now be had with Intel’s Core i5 and i7 chips and the 17-inch gets the i5 as standard and the i7 as an option. This speeds things up, although the clock speeds actually drop, maxing out now at 2.66GHz instead of the previous 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo (or 3.06GHz special order). There is also a KITT-style “turbo-boost” which will up the clock speeds of some chip cores when applications demand it.<br />
<span id="more-4364"></span><br />
The graphics chip has been bumped to NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M, with a choice of graphics memory options. This replaces the NVIDIA 9400M and 9600M GT cards of the previous generation. The biggest change here is that you can now switch between the low power and the high performance modes without rebooting or logging out: the MacBook switches for you.</p>
<p>The 15-inch MacBook also gains the option of a higher resolution screen: 1680 x 1050 pixels against the standard 1440 x 900. This combines with the new NVIDIA chips to give proper HD video.<br />
<a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/macbook-early-2010.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4366" title="macbook-early-2010" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/macbook-early-2010-300x144.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="144" /></a><br />
The other big change is battery life. All models get a boost of a couple hours, pushing the 13-inch MacBook Pro up to ten hours (although this is no iPad, so expect that to be lower in real life). The 15 and 17-inchers manage a respectable 8-9 hours.</p>

<li>Lenovo Announces ThinkPad L412 And L512 Green Notebooks</li>
</ul>
<p>Lenovo has launched a new series of notebooks, the Lenovo ThinkPad ‘L’ series, and they have announced two new models in the range, the ThinkPad L412 and ThinkPad L512.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/lenovo-thinpad-l-series11.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3592" title="lenovo-thinpad-l-series11" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/lenovo-thinpad-l-series11-300x253.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="253" /></a></p>
<p>According to Lenovo both models are designed to be environmentally friendly, with around thirty percent of each model made from post-consumer recycled materials.<span id="more-3591"></span></p>
<p>On top of that Lenovo have said that the ThinkPad L series notebooks meet eight different military standard for ruggedness, meaning they are resistant to high and low temperatures as well as vibration, dust and altitude.</p>
<p>None of this fervor is lost on Lenovo which is now launching its new ThinkPad L-Series notebooks. The new ThinkPad L412 and L512 notebooks support EPEAT Gold, Energy Star 5.0, feature materials with up to 30 percent Post Consumer Content, and are shipped with 100 percent recyclable packaging material.</p>
<p>Like most notebook manufacturers, Lenovo is looking to add Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 processors to all of its professional-level notebooks. In the case of the new ThinkPad L-412 (14&#8243;) and L512 (15&#8243;), Lenovo gives users the choice of Core i3 or Core i5 processors with TurboBoost &#8212; the pair is available with processors ranging from the Core i3-300M (2.13GHz) to the Core i5-540M (2.53GHz).</p>
<p>Graphics duties are handled by an integrated Intel GMA HD graphics solution and a discrete ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5145 with 512 MB DDR3 memory.</p>
<p>Both machines come equipped with a 1366&#215;768 LED-backlit display, support for up to 8GB of 1333MHz DDR3 memory, up to a 320GB HDD, fingerprint reader, GbE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and can be optioned with WiMAX. Base machines come equipped with 4-cell batteries, but users can choose to go with an optional 6-cell or 9-cell battery &#8212; battery life jumps to around 8 hours with a 9-cell battery.</p>

<li>MacBook Pro 15&#8243; Unibody Core i5 Teardown</li>
</ul>
<p><a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/iFixit-macbook-pro-Core-i71.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3441" title="iFixit-macbook-pro-Core-i7" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/iFixit-macbook-pro-Core-i71-300x231.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="231" /></a>Apple&#8217;s need for faster and better processors has led it to incorporate Core i5s and i7s into its latest lineup of MacBook Pros.<span id="more-3458"></span><strong>Step 1  — MacBook Pro 15&#8243; Unibody Core i5 Teardown</strong></p>
<p>Our new MacBook Pro&#8217;s specifications:</p>
<p>2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 with 3 MB shared level 3 cache</p>
<p>4 GB of 1066 MHz DD3 SDRAM</p>
<p>15.4 inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display</p>
<p>Intel HD Graphics and NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M with 256 MB of GDD3 RAM</p>
<p><strong>Step 2</strong></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/POyUSxnUPTjUYSbu.standard.jpeg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3442" title="POyUSxnUPTjUYSbu.standard" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/POyUSxnUPTjUYSbu.standard.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a></strong></p>
<p>Apple is still using the model number A1286 for the new MacBook Pro. We&#8217;ll have to find a new way to differentiate this laptop from previous models.<br />
Perhaps Model A1286 Core i5? Only time will tell.</p>
<p><strong>Step 3</strong></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/QWQdYdoCwCAqopfv.standard.jpeg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3443" title="QWQdYdoCwCAqopfv.standard" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/QWQdYdoCwCAqopfv.standard.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a><br />
</strong></p>
<p>Removing the rear cover will get things going.<br />
Servicing the battery is not super easy, due to the fact that you need a Tri-Wing screwdriver to get it out of the machine.</p>
<p><strong>Step 4</strong></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/dMvHZpKm1hGbxbIC.standard.jpeg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3444" title="dMvHZpKm1hGbxbIC.standard" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/dMvHZpKm1hGbxbIC.standard.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a><br />
</strong></p>
<p>Taking off the rear cover reveals a machine that is not very exciting or different from earlier MacBook Pro models.<br />
As usual, there&#8217;s a sticker warning against removing the battery.</p>
<p><strong>Step 5</strong></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/OVcIfULZPb3Mrttb.standard.jpeg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3445" title="OVcIfULZPb3Mrttb.standard" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/OVcIfULZPb3Mrttb.standard.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a></strong></p>
<p>Silly sticker&#8230; You can&#8217;t stop us!<br />
For some odd reason, Apple has stopped using five-point Torx screws found on other MBP 15&#8243; Unibodies in favor of Tri-Wing screws. Try as you may, Apple, you won&#8217;t win. We got all the screwdrivers right here.<br />
The battery is now rated at 77.5 Wh. That&#8217;s just a tad bit more than the 73 Wh battery found in last year&#8217;s 15&#8243; model, but not enough to explain the 1-2 hour battery life improvement Apple is claiming for this machine.<br />
Perhaps they optimized the Pro&#8217;s power consumption?</p>
<p><strong>Step 6</strong></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/BOpmIQcsPEIlumYc.standard.jpeg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3446" title="BOpmIQcsPEIlumYc.standard" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/BOpmIQcsPEIlumYc.standard.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a></strong></p>
<p>The Wi-Fi/Bluetooth board location is one of the few major changes made to the new model.</p>
<p><strong>Step 7</strong></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/uJEK2mHhRvE5UxNR.standard.jpeg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3447" title="uJEK2mHhRvE5UxNR.standard" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/uJEK2mHhRvE5UxNR.standard.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="224" /></a></strong></p>
<p>Removing the AirPort/Bluetooth assembly first requires disconnecting the three antenna connectors with a plastic spudger.<br />
A single screw is all that&#8217;s left holding the assembly in place.<br />
Two more screws need to be removed to separate the AirPort Express card.</p>
<p><strong>Step 8</strong></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/HHJmWYjIcCWMcJvP.standard.jpeg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3448" title="HHJmWYjIcCWMcJvP.standard" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/HHJmWYjIcCWMcJvP.standard.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a></strong></p>
<p>A close up view of the AirPort Express card.</p>
<p><strong>Step 9</strong></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/MHXdDw5nrlT6KCHF.thumbnail.jpeg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3449" title="MHXdDw5nrlT6KCHF.thumbnail" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/MHXdDw5nrlT6KCHF.thumbnail.jpeg" alt="" width="96" height="72" /></a><br />
</strong></p>
<p>Getting to the optical drive takes a bit more work&#8230;<br />
The rear vent is held in place by both Phillips #00 and T8 Torx screws.<br />
The cast aluminum vent plate is painted with a satin white rubberized paint and probably adds a good amount of rigidity to the device.<br />
The lack of structural supports like these in previous plastic MacBooks accounts for their flexibility.</p>
<p><strong>Step 10</strong></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/uvaFtyVQBtWxWEHu.standard.jpeg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3450" title="uvaFtyVQBtWxWEHu.standard" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/uvaFtyVQBtWxWEHu.standard.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="224" /></a></strong></p>
<p>The digging continues as we remove the speaker/AirPort/Bluetooth card assembly.<br />
After popping off a few connectors, removing a few screws (including one inserted into the side of the optical drive), the optical drive is almost free.</p>
<p><strong>Step 11 </strong></p>
<p><a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/jNgaOaWdSAtD4WDF.standard.jpeg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3451" title="jNgaOaWdSAtD4WDF.standard" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/jNgaOaWdSAtD4WDF.standard.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>
<p>Unlike the earlier plastic MacBooks, AirPort and Bluetooth share the same board.<br />
The Bluetooth model number is BCM943224PCIEBT.<br />
All three antenna cables appear to route into the display assembly. This may be an improvement for Bluetooth range, since on previous MacBooks the Bluetooth antenna was located above the optical drive and not inside the display assembly.</p>
<p><strong>step 12 </strong></p>
<p><a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/LUurdYgccfEQbFaG.standard.jpeg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3452" title="LUurdYgccfEQbFaG.standard" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/LUurdYgccfEQbFaG.standard.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="224" /></a></p>
<p>After removing the final few screws, lift the optical drive out of its comfy plastic unibody home.<br />
No surprises here. The optical drive is an 8x SATA SuperDrive. It&#8217;s a Panasonic model UJ898, made in China September of 2009.</p>
<p><strong>Step 13</strong></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/q3nWk4UCGSKdQJ2a.standard.jpeg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3453" title="q3nWk4UCGSKdQJ2a.standard" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/q3nWk4UCGSKdQJ2a.standard.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a></strong></p>
<p>It has a fan.<br />
After a few twists of a screwdriver and the flick of a spudger, the fan lifts right out.<br />
The fan design appears relatively unchanged from previous plastic MacBooks, except that it mounts to the upper case on this model.</p>
<p><strong>Step 14</strong><br />
<a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/R16iPOpNvxN2a1SR.standard.jpeg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3454" title="R16iPOpNvxN2a1SR.standard" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/R16iPOpNvxN2a1SR.standard.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="224" /></a><br />
Six T6 screws and several fragile connectors stand between us and logic board freedom.</p>
<p><strong>Step 15</strong><br />
<a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/DFKOnVrAF6yASTfD.standard.jpeg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3455" title="DFKOnVrAF6yASTfD.standard" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/DFKOnVrAF6yASTfD.standard.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a><br />
The logic board removed.<br />
Like the MacBook Pro Unibody, Apple nicely designed this machine so the logic board and heat sink come out as a single part. This way, you&#8217;ll only need to get your hands dirty with thermal paste if you&#8217;re replacing the logic board.</p>
<p><strong>Step 16</strong><br />
<a href="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/gTUFIptGaCkxLp22.standard.jpeg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3457" title="gTUFIptGaCkxLp22.standard" src="http://www.techwhatnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/gTUFIptGaCkxLp22.standard.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="224" /></a><br />
The MacBook sports a NVidia 9400M GPU and an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.26 GHz CPU.<br />
This is exactly the same GPU and CPU in the base model 13&#8243; Unibody MacBook Pro. This CPU offers a whopping 130 MHz increase over the 2.13 GHz chip that powered the old plastic MacBook.</p>
