They both have the same volumetric dimensions (115.2mm x 58.6mm x 9.3 mm) but the iPhone 4S is a few grams (three to be precise) heavier than the iPhone 4 at 140g. We attribute that slight increase to a marginal increase in the weight of the battery.

The screen used (3.5-inch IPS TFT with a 960×640 pixel display), the glass cover at the back and the proprietary connector are all still there.

That’s the question the folks at SquareTrade asked — and answered — by dropping an Apple iPad 2 (with and without a Smart Cover attached) and a Research in Motion BlackBerry PlayBook, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy onto a concrete floor from a height of about three feet, roughly waist height. SquareTrade is one of several companies that sells insurance for mobile devices, so it has a vested interest in understanding what kind of risk it assumes when by offering policies for these devices.

BlackBerry PlayBook

The drop tests were performed from waist-high as trying to simulate if you drop the tablet from a coffee table or on the street.

Drop #1 – Scratched the corners, broke glass in the corner
Drop #2 – Landed flat on the screen and shattered it

I’d like to see a drop test with the PlayBook in a few different style cases.

The initial drop resulted in light scratches on the screen, and dented corners – still usable. However, the second drop completely cracked the screen whilst shattering the glass. It’s too bad they did not show any attempts in using the Playbook in its near-destroyed form.

iPad 2

The screen of the iPad 2 without a Smart Cover shatters on the first, glass-down drop, although the iPad continues to function. But the screen of an iPad 2 with a Smart Cover installed survives undamaged and the iPad continues to function after being dropped glass-down. When SquareTrade dropped the iPad 2 with Smart Cover from a higher position (about five feet) 500 feet, the Smart Cover became detached and the iPad 2′s screen was damaged, but not nearly as badly as the unprotected iPad 2 screen dropped at three feet.

First, it’s reported that the new iOS 5 will make multitasking even more friendly on an iPhone. Analysts have said the new mobile operating system will offer genuine multitasking” for the first time.

Apple today previewed iOS 5, the latest version of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, and released a beta version to iOS Developer Program members.

The new version features over 200 new features for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch including: “Notification Center, an innovative way to easily view and manage notifications in one place without interruption; iMessage, a new messaging service that lets you easily send text messages, photos and videos between all iOS devices; and Newsstand, a new way to purchase and organize your newspaper and magazine subscriptions.”

iOS 5 includes more than 200 new features including a brand-new notifications system, and system-wide Twitter integration.
Notifications Center.

In the current iOS, notifications pop up while surfing, watching videos and even while playing games. In iOS 5, Notifications don’t interrupt you and disappear quickly. With Notification Center, you can keep track of all your notifications in one place. You can configure which notifications you want to see. This new notifications concept is based on the Jailbreak tweak, MobileNotifier. The developer of MobileNotifier was recently hired by Apple, hence the change.

Apple has taken the Android approach in iOS 5 for all notifications. Notifications appear after swiping the top of the screen. When you get a notification, it pops in from the top with a different color so it’s not missed, and if not addressed it disappears with a rotating-cube transition. Also weather and stock updates are now nested in the notifications tray for quick access, and it updates by location automatically.

iMessage:

The latest and most useful feature in iOS 5 is, iMessages. It lets you send send unlimited text messages from your iDevice 3G/Wi-fi to any other iDevice on both the 3G and WiFi network. You can send Text, Photo, Video, etc from your device to other device. In addition, it shows the various kinds of reports, such as Message Delivery Reports, iChat reports, etc. iMessages can only be used with iDevices only.

Newsstand:

iOS 5 organizes all your favorite newspapers and subscriptions in the Newsstand. Newsstand is a folder which lets you access your publications quickly. When iOS 5 launches in the fall, there will be a new section of the App Store for newspapers and magazines with subscriptions, It automatically downloads the latest editions for you without going to the app, downloading, etc.

Reminders:

The latest Reminder service in the iOS 5 will make your to-do list much easier to navigate and to do such tasks. In the reminders, you can set tasks either by time based or by location based. When the time is near for the task, the iDevice will alert you for that. In location based, when you reach that geographic location, the device will alert you. Reminders also works with iCal, Outlook, and iCloud, so changes you make update automatically on all your devices and calendars.

Twitter:

Twitter is integrated right into the iOS 5. You can now tweet from within Apple’s native apps: Safari, Youtube, Photos will be integrated with your Twitter account, so you can make a tweet directly from these apps.. The “Tweet” button is located under the sharing pane

. You can log into Twitter from System Preferences. It’s a single log in, you will be able to tweet much easier than before. Before, each time you install a new app, you had to authenticate your Twitter account with that app. making Tweeting faster without entering the login details each time.

Camera:

The camera app is now much easier to open even while the phone is locked. You can take pictures from your iPhone camera by just tapping the Volume Up button. When the phone is locked, you will be able to take pictures, but can’t access other data. The grid lines feature will let you take accurate pictures for your project, work.

In addition to snapping pics and vids, the iPhone gets an option to lock focus and exposure by holding down on a part of the image. Zoom controls are now activated via pinch-to-zoom, which makes sense but feels a lot more sensitive than the previous tap-and-drag method. With iCloud, you can share your photos to other iDevices.

Photos:

In iOS 5, it’s possible to crop, rotate, enhance, and remove red-eye without leaving the Photos app. You can even organize the photos in folders from the device directly, no need to sync via a computer. Also, you can quickly jump straight to the camera even if your iPhone is locked by double tapping the home button.

Safari Reader:

In the traditional Safari browser, Apple added the Reader feature which lets you make content as much better as you wish. You can change the formatting of a webpage to make it more comfortable to read. In iOS 5, you can remove the navigation, the ads from the sites and enjoy clutter-free environment while browsing. It includes the Reader List feature, too which makes a list of all your favorite webpages and syncs them with your iDevices as well.

Safari appears to cache pages when not active so you don’t have to reload them when you switch back and forth. The new Safari also brings the Reader feature, displaying a website’s content in an easy text only view. The good feature in Safari in iOS 5 is, Tabbed browsing. Tabbed browsing is similar function which you use in your PC browser such as Firefox, Chrome, etc. It lets you open many websites at a time and you can change the tab to switch to the website. Apple has limited this feature to iPad only, because of its larger screen. It wouldn’t be better for iPhone, iPod due to their small screens.

PC Free:

In the iOS 4 or older, an iDevice user must require a PC to do the work with his iDevice. Like, to updating the device to latest firmware, syncing media, doing other tasks. PC was necessary to do such things. With the iOS 5, PC is no longer needed.

With iOS 5, you no longer need a computer to activate and set up your iPhone, iPod or iPad. The device can be set up wirelessly. iOS updates can be downloaded OTA. Also, restoring the device is now easier through iCloud. No need to plug in into iTunes to restore your iDevice.

You can update your iDevice with the latest firmware updates directly from the device, no iTunes or such things required. OTA-Over The Air updates will do it without connecting to the PC. This time, the updates will become smaller, because the iDevice will only download the Delta Updates (changes updates only), thus reducing the use of your bandwidth. The screen has changed from the conventional iTunes to Welcome screen.

Mail:

In the Mail on iOS 5, you can compose rich text formatting mails, bold, italic, underline. The Full message service is really useful in the iOS 5 Mail, it lets you see the messages which haven’t been downloaded to your device but exist on the server. You can send encrypted mails using the S/MIME . The lock icon will appear when you are sending encrypted message.

The above mentioned features are only just preview, iOS 5 is the most advanced available Mobile Operating System. It will be available this fall along with iCloud. Apple has already seeded the beta version to the developers for testing.

Keynote, Pages, and Numbers are available starting today from the App Store for $9.99 for new users, and as a free update for those who currently use the iWork apps on their iPad.

If you aren’t familiar with the iWork suite, Pages is a word processor, Numbers is a spreadsheet program, and Keynote is a presentation builder. Not surprisingly, the apps have a strong design emphasis, but some users say they doesn’t have as many features as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Keynote, Pages and Numbers import and export documents from iWork for Mac and Microsoft Office; print wirelessly using AirPrint; and Apple-designed themes and templates. All iWork apps now include improved document management with thumbnail images that let you find your files quickly, organize them and group them into folders using intuitive gestures, says Schiller. From the Tools button in the toolbar, you can share any presentation, document or spreadsheet without leaving the app.

We all use torrents to download whatever we want to and now iPhone and iPad users can too. Well you could use torrents on the iPhone and iPad before but you had to jailbreak it, and now you can download torrents without jailbreaking your iPhone and iPad. Here is how to do it.

Let me first begin by saying that if you have a jailbroken phone, you can simply download a torrent client (here, here, or here) from Cydia.

Download Torrents Without Jailbreaking

Step 1: Download the application Filer which costs about $3.99, or you can use the smaller version which is free but remember it can store no more then 7 files

step 2: Create a free account on Torrific.com by going here

Step 3: Copy the url of the torrent that your interested, and login in and paste it and click Get

step 4: You will see a screen showing you what files will be downloaded, if your happy click Initiate bittorrent transmission

step 5: After the download has been completed you will get an email with a link. Open filer app and point it to the said direct link. Remember you have to do this on your iPhone or iPad not on a computer.

Step 6: The download is ready. It will be downloaded in a zip file and whenever its finished just move it to menu and unzip it.

keep in mind you’ll need a fast connection to do this properly, since you’ll have to download large files. Wi-Fi is highly recommended, and 3G if there’s no other option, as long as you have a generous data plan. Also use common sense when downloading files onto a device with really limited storage: make sure you have enough space on your phone.

One word of warning from the developer:

Don’t put the Settings.app or Cydia.app inside a folder. If you forget your password and can’t access both of these applications, then it makes things much more difficult.
